There are many good books out there. Here I share my reading list, as well as one recommended by Jenny Wells- a phenomenal breeder of the past who contributed to the breed far beyond breeding good dogs. Please note I don’t own any of these articles, they are found online and belong to the rightful owners of the written articles.
Jenny’s List of must haves;
Written by Jenny Wells
- Genetics: An Introduction for Dog Breeders by J. Isabell
- Control of Canine Genetic Diseases (Howell Reference Books) by George A. Padgett
- Canine Genetics: A Definitive Study by Malcolm Beverley. Willis (Jul 1980)
- Canine Genetic Disease Information System by Donald F. Patterson
- Successful Dog Breeding (Howell reference books) by Chris Walkowicz and Bonnie Wilcox
- Genetics for Dog Breeders by Roy Robinson.
- Dogs, Dog Breeding and the Control of Inherited Disease in the Dog by The UK Kennel Club.
- I also have “The Canine Genome” but it is highly technical and doesn’t give a huge amount of practical information, it is also expensive, so probably not worth the expenditure.
- An absolute MUST-own is “The Book of The Bitch” by J.M Evans and Kay White for anyone contemplating breeding. A brilliant book to read over and over and keep by your side during whelping and rearing puppies.
